Class ix: february 5th 2018; grammar and discourse. They had seen the news and had tried calling before leaving home. Internal change: a process that substitutes one non-morphemic segment for another to mark a change in meaning. Irregular past tense forms like sing-sang, sink-sank: suppletion: a process that replaces a morpheme with an entirely different morpheme in order to indicate a meaning contrast. Different from internal change, where only part of the morpheme changes: go-went; is-was; good-better. Syntax: the study of the structure of sentences. Which types of words can occur next to one another. Where certain words can occur in a sentence. "don"t end a sentence with a preposition" - prescriptivist rule. Something i like talking about / something about which i like to talk. Discourse analysis: the analysis of language "beyond the sentence" Discourse markers: words that contribute to the flor and structure of conversation, but don"t have any real meaning out of context.
