Cowpox: vaccine for smallpox discovered by jenner, eradicated small pox by 1980. Antigenic cross-reactivity: cowpox + smallpox have similar surface ag. Vaccine: a modified component of the pathogen that induces protective immune response specific to the pathogen: most powerful + cost effective tools to protect against disease, eradicate disease ex. Polio: protect indiv at risk ex. elderly + immunodepressed (herd immunity) Herd immunity: when majority of pop is vaccinated + provides protection to un-vaccinated indiv. Ivig: iv igg from vaccinated donors prevent disease following exposure (tetanus, rabies, diptheria, snake venom), no memory and dn last long. Active immunization: induces humoral or cell-mediated immunity + memory. Live attenuated: sabin (polio in remote areas), mmr, bacillus calmette. Inactivated w alum adjuvant: salk (polio), flu vaccine. Subunit vaccines w alum adjuvant: toxoid vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria), recombinant proteins (hep b), hpv vaccine.
