MUSC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Counterpoint
Document Summary
Born in hamburg but spent much of his life in vienna. A virtuoso pianist who premiered many of his own works. He studied the music of the baroque and classical eras and modeled his music on theirs, but injected it with romantic harmonies and aesthetics. His music is often considered both romantic and academic, given its highly technical nature: much longer pieces with more chromaticism and exotic harmonies than you would find in any of the viennese classical composers. He was a master of counterpoint and was an important figure in the revival of interest in renaissance and baroque counterpoint. Almost of all his output is for solo piano, finest in europe. Born in poland but moved to france when he was 21. He retained a love of poland, and his music is seen as being influenced by polish nationalism, especially in polish-themed pieces like the mazurkas and polonaises.
