Post-operative period: beings immediately after surgery and con"t until client is charged from medical care. Postoperative assessment: loc: alert and oriented, vital signs including o2 stat, pain assessment, head to toe system assessment: airway & breathing, cv & pv, neuro recheck, gi & gu, wound dressing. & drainage tubes: drainage on the surgical dressing when the patient is transferred from the pacu to the clinical unit. Priority actions: recall report from pacu for # and type of drains in use, reinforce surgical dressing, note and record the type, amount, colour and odor of drainage, notify surgeon of excessive drainage type and amount. 1: change dressing and assess wound as ordered. Airway obstruction: most commonly caused by blockage of airway by pt tongue. Intervention/ prevention: deep breathing and coughing lungs moving and expel secretions, get patient moving as soon as possible, give pain meds to allow mobility.
