PHAR 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Cruciferous Vegetables, Cervical Cancer, Beta-Carotene
Document Summary
Cancer detection, screening and anti cancer drugs anticancer drugs. Long term tests in humans: require ultimate proof. They require carefully designed epidemiological studies and vigorous evaluation of clinical observations. This is complicated because cancer has a long latency period from exposure to onset of symptoms. It is also a long and costly process to conduct these studies. It is also difficult because humans are exposed to many drugs and environmental agents. Shorter term tests in animals: officially recognized tests can be conducted to predict carcinogenic potential. However they are costly and results are not always transferable high doses used and inter species variability. Ames test this is not considered a viable test for cancer but it is low cost and quick to do. Mutant bacteria regain the ability to grow when exposed to mutagenic chemicals. There is a good correlation between known carcinogens and positive tests. *bacteria require histamine to grow but do not produce it themselves.
