Lecture 16, week 8: collective defence: cold war origins. People treat it as collective security but it is not: military alliance not, formed against someone right off the bat, collective security do away with the balance of power. What is wrong with ir, root cause, war: collective defense operative logical principles, alliances, balance of power abolished. Cd depends on functioning balance of power: need to amass power for arm safety, need to have a fault enemy, alliance: past dangerous moment. If defeated or wins: no justification for ongoing existence soviet union paradoxically kept it going. Article 5 nato attack on one is an attack on everyone else: washington core, 1949, treaty. All allies figure interests, but does not oblige allies to attack militarily. Remained cold between two power blocks: nato and warsaw treaty organization. Permanent 5 against the german and italians in ww2. Tension between us and soviet union inevitable.
