R w cox: two studies of ir. Problem solving approach: started off with a central problem (war and peace), focuses on state actors. Critical theory: focus is on systems and system structure and the linkages between civil society and international society. Views the central issue confronting world politics as the unequal division of global wealth. Governments always grow in size and complexity. The growth should always coincide with the economy. Realist and liberal ir: state centric, though they don"t have a set definition of what the state is. Morgenthau: power is determined by interest, and interest determines outcomes. Power is a getting b to do something b otherwise would not do, all in a"s interests. R w cox: the problem solving field of study is state and power centered but there is no understanding of what either of these things are. Political economy is a field of study that has a constantly evolutionary understanding of the state.
