Mental disorders have existed throughout human history, and evidence exists that humans attempted to treat mental disorders as early as prehistoric times. Throughout history, society has viewed people with mental disorders both positively and negatively; unfortunately, negative perceptions largely dominated throughout history and across cultures. It was usually seen that demons or evil spirits possessed these people. Here, clients were often chain to the walls in dark, damp cells. They were malnourished and received very little mental or physical health care. The male incontinent ward included 400 naked men in a small room treated badly. In the 1950"s, society shifted to believe that individuals with mental disorders should supported and live in regular homes, work in the community, and participate in social and leisure activities like everyone else. Not completely effective the number of people with a mental disorder in canada today who are homeless, in jail, or living in poverty is disturbingly high.
