Document Summary
What makes it a language: semanticity: use of symbols to communicate meaning, generativity: communicating new ideas, displacement: able to communicate ideas that aren"t here right now (not in the here and now) Crying baby: not a symbol of what the baby is feeling. Dance that bees do on the honey comb for food that will exist in the future. What are the parts of language: phonemes. We are good at telling them apart. Not the same thing as the alphabet. Some info (ie. light) is perceived as points along a continuum. With phonemes, there are no shades of grey. Intonation in chinese carries both syntax and semantic information. English mostly like this, outside of special cases. Either free (its own word) or bound (ie. a su x) One morning i shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How it got into my pyjamas i"ll never know - groucho marx. Can completely change the meaning of language.
