Language and Communication
What is language?
• Earliest studies of language
o Aphasia: a language disorder caused by damage to the brain structures
that support using and understanding language
o B’ area: the region of the left frontal lobe that controls our ability to
articulate speech sounds that compose words

• Properties of language
o Language is a form of communication that involves the use of spoken,
written, or gestural symbols that are combined in a rule-based form
• Phonemes and Morphemes
o Phonemes are the most basic of units of speech sounds
o Morphemes are the smallest meaningful units of language; cannot be
broken down (eg. pig)
o Semantics: the study of how people come to understand the meaning
from words
• Syntax
o The rules for combining words and morphemes into meaningful phrases
and sentences
• Pragmatics
o The study of nonlinguistic elements of language; places heavy emphasis
