Personality
Contemporary Approaches to Personality
• What is personality?
o A characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to
each individual, and remains relatively consistent over time and situations
o Idiographic approach –
unique personality characteristics
o Nomothetic approach – examine personality in large groups of people,
with the aim of making generalizations about personality structure
• The Trait Perspective

o Factor analysis – a statistical technique used to group items that people
respond to similarly

o The Five Factor Model – created by McCrae and Costa (1987)
▪ A trait-based theory of personality based on the finding that
personality can be described using five major dimensions
▪ The factors are: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness, Neuroticism
▪ Individuals score either highly or lowly on each of these personality
factors
