Cognitive therapy was developed initially to treat clients with depression, but is now also been adapted for use with clients who have anxiety disorders, eating disorders, mood disorders and schizophrenia. It is often combined with cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt) Cbt focuses on how psychological problems are the results of maladaptive ways of thinking, which in turn lead to maladaptive behaviours. Based on the finding that depressed people tend to focus more on negative events than positive ones.
