Document Summary

Anxiety is a very adaptive response - has helped us to survive over time. Fear-triggering . e. g when you see a bear while camping. Seeing a spider crawling on a log next to where you"re sitting (while camping) but having a significant anxiety response. Physical reactions occur as a result of physical arousal. E. g. sweaty palms, dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate, etc. Behaviours are often avoidance behaviours - getting away from the situation. Cognitive: thinking too much, overestimating what will happen. Behavioral: avoiding fear leads to maintenance of that fear. It is better to habituate to these fears by exposing ourselves to them more. Our mind likes to play tricks on us . Overestimate the severity of what will happen. Difficult to take in everything at once when trying to deal with a fear. Have clients rate how much they fear something on different levels. Bringing in the fear stimulus (e. g. spider) and checking the client"s reaction to it.
