Because we have adapted in a way that favours group membership, it follows that we find the experience of exclusion to be very aversive. Can be a minimal group (cyberball study) even a group that we dislike. Harmful to health to feel lonely or excluded. At first they play together then one person is excluded. Actual act of exclusion still psychologically impactful.
