At first glace helping people seems costly, but there are some benefits. Kin selection: we are more likely to help people who are biologically related to us. This ensures that our genes are getting passed on. Reciprocal altruism: when you are in a situation where you need help, you can count on the person you helped. Co-operative group: we are more likely to help group members. This ensures that the group remains strong and your likelihood of survival increases. In all these cases, we are helping to ensure the survival of our genes (ourselves, children etc) Social rewards: the more we help the more social reward we get. In a group, higher status is given to the person that help others the most.
