Asch (1951: interested in conformity where objective truth was obvious, line comparison task in groups. !1: confederates provided initially correct judgments and then subsequently. Informational in uence - in uence that produces conformity because a person believes others are correct in their judgments. Post-experimental interviews is asch study: thought they misunderstood instructions, thought their eye-sight had gone bad/was distorted. Private responses in studies similar to asch reduce conformity but do not eliminate it. Unanimity - accurate or non-accurate dissension both reduce conformity, do not eliminate. Decreased self-perceptions of task competence lead to greater conformity. Group size up to 3 confederates in asch paradigm increased conformity. Normative in uence - in uence that produces conformity because a person fears negative social consequences of appearing deviant. Group member interdependence increases conformity (when they get a reward for good performance, etc. ) Conformity greater when group members are like or seen as similar to us.
