Transneuronal degeneration- spread of degeneration from damaged neurons to neurons connected via synapses: antero and retrograde, loss of neurotrophins. Collateral sprouting- when an axon degenerates, axon branches grow out from adjacent healthy neurons & synapse at the sites vacated by the degenerating axon.
