Looking ahead: our culture is very future oriented, there are general benefits for those with future orientations. Presenting diverse examples in curricula may be important. Increased pain endorphins: used in psychotherapy, built using the 5 developmental antecedents, previous similar successes, modelling from others, imagery/visualization, verbal persuasion from experts, arousal and positive emotions. Learned optimism: seligmans view, based on learned helplessness and attributional style theories, optimists make external, variable, and specific attributions for failure, pessimists make internal, stable, and global attributions for failure. Childhood antecedents of learned optimism: partly genetic, partly learned, promoted via safe, coherent enviros, adaptive excusing modelled by parents. Pessimism: develops when modelled by parents, related to parental death or divorce, abuse, incest. Neurobiology: abnormal limbic system, dysfunctional operations of the lateral prefrontal cortex and paralimbic system, deficiencies of neurotransmitters, markers linked to perceived control and pessimism depression thoughts.
