Socialization: is the process by which individuals acquire thoughts feelings and behaviours appropriate to their positions in society. Other people are essential to the development of our senses of self. The looking glass self: our sense of self reflecting the sentiments of other people which was a concept coined by charles horton cooley. Everyone has a generalized other, our perceptions of the attitudes of the whole community. Racial socialization: learning about ones ethnic and racial identity in a given culture. Gender socialization: the learning of expectations about how to behave related to ones" gender: research shows that gender socialization begins even before children are born, as parent"s attribute gender characteristics to their children. Children"s cultural routines: stable sets of activities objects and values that children produce and chare in interaction with each other. Children also engage in an interpretive reproduction of adult culture, learning and taking on elements of adult culture to meet the needs of their peer group.
