Document Summary

Motor pathways from the primary motor cortex control many voluntary movements, especially the fine motor movements of the hands. Descending tracts- motor and ascending tracts- sensory. Initiation: premotor areas of cerebral cortex, stimulation of upper motor neurons. Propagation down descending tracts to muscle: upper to lower motor neurons, to muscle. Coordination involvement of basal nuclei and cerebellum. Primary motor area of precentral gyrus- 30% of upper motor neurons. Premotor area- 30% of upper motor neurons: motor functions organized before initiation. Primary somatic sensory cortex- 40% of upper motor neurons. Prefrontal area- motivation/planning of movements, emotional behaviour, mood. Broca area in the premotor area is responsible for speech. Descending pathways containing axons that carry action potentials from regions of the cerebrum/ cerebellum to the brainstem/spinal cord. Two types of descending pathways: direct pathways, also called the pyramidal system, are involved in maintaining muscle tone and controlling the speed and precision of skilled movements, primarily fine movements involved in dexterity.
