Explaining, demonstrating and reviewing the steps of an activity can provide important support for the development of cognitive processes. Provide enough assistance to allow the child to do the task. Ensure that each step is mastered before proceeding to another step. Forward chaining: the teacher helps the child to learn the first step, and then the second, and so on. Backward chaining: the teacher leaves the last step for the child to complete, then the last two steps, and so on.
