There are two types of lettering: serif- small dashes and projections at the ends of the letters. A poi(cid:374)t is a shade less than 1/72 inch. The size of a letter is measured by its height. A line of type on the page should not exceed one and a half alphabets (or 39 characters). Adult books are usually set in and around 12- point type. Books for younger readers are often set in much larger sizes. There are three methods of printing: letterpress, gravure, offset. There are two types of presses: sheet-fed, web. Same process that was developed by gutenberg in the fifteenth century. In this method, ink is applied to raised surfaces which impress their image on paper. Gravure printing is used for art books and other heavily illustrated books.
