Document Summary
Cause of crime: tempted by or possessed by the devil: dominant explanation during this time, if they were tempted or possessed; matters because it"s used when blaming the criminal. If they were tempted by the devil but still committed the crime; they were blamed for being weak, not being able to ignore the temptations. If they were possessed by the devil they can be seen as innocent, not in control of own actions, becomes harder to prevent crimes. Response to crime: punishment, deterrence: if tempted: provide punishment scary enough so next time you learn to resist the temptations, if possessed: capital punishment!!! The only way to kill the devil is to kill those that have the devil within them. Scientific approach: demonstrated evidence rather than theories about how they think the world works, theories have to be tested, falsifiable, repeatable.
