How community corrections are facilitated: front end: dealing with people on probation or those who have community service orders. Chances are the offenses aren"t that serious, and the records don"t stay for long. Or the offender"s criminal records are not that extensive. Less problem for corrections: back end: parole: after period of incarceration, tries to slowly integrate you back into society. Have to deal with housing (will focus on back-end next class) Idea for prisons is that a harsh and more punitive sanction will deter offenders. Matched samples (should match on a variety of variables such as age, gender, drug use, socio- economic status, family support, type of offence) Best studies match on a whole range of variables. The netherlands samples (all offenders: changed law so offenders can receive 240 hours of community service or up to six months in prison.
