Role of the media as a public institution. Provides coverage of a range of social issues. People assume that the media provides balances coverage. The media is controlled by those in power. Media paus a central role in framing public perceptions about issues. Women have to act a certain way. When you step outside the box you get disciplined . They make us think that poverty is related to crime. In reality the wealthy commit the most crimes. The crimes that are committed by poor people are reported on more because they are inferiror. Also frames policy and social responses regarding those issues. Sends messages to those who are oppressed - they often come to accept their oppression. Conservative construction of the poor as individuals who choose not to participate economically; notions of undeservingness. They waste their money on useless things. Liberalist victims of systemic inequities who need to be cared for infantilising.
