Jane is an orphaned 10 year old living with a family that dislikes her (her aunt and three cousins) She is sent to lowood boarding school for orphaned girls. She excels at school, grows in strength and befriends her teacher, miss temple, and a girl named. When jane is 18, she decides to leave lowood to become a governess at thornfield hall. While there, jane falls in love with the owner of the house, mr. edward rochester. During her stay at thornfield hall, jane notices strange happenings (such as fires, strange laughter and even an attack on a guest), which are all blamed on one of the servants, grace. Jane goes to see her dying aunt, who informs her that she has family who tried to contact her long ago. Rochester tries to convince jane to stay as his mistress, but she refuses and leaves him.
