EUS 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Forest Management, Nuclear Fission, Greenhouse Gas
Document Summary
The global carbon cycle: atmosphere and oceans play major role as carbon sink, deep, underground, terrestrial deposits are where most of carbon is stored, extracting fuels and burning them releases green house gasses. Green house gasses: sectors that emit ghg, industrial processes, power stations, waste disposal treatment, residential, agriculture by products. Atmospheric co2: going past 2 is point of no return. Impacts: health impacts, agriculture impacts crop yields, forest impacts, water research impacts, impacts on coastal areas, species and natural areas. Cities at risk: deserts and drylands (home to 1/3 of pop) will become hotter, decrease in soil moisture, increase in fires, erosion, invasion of non-native plants. Human health: air pollution, asthma and cardiovascular disease, severe weather, injuries, mental health impacts. Increasing allergens: respiratory allergies, asthma, environmental degradation, civil conflict, forest migration, mental health impacts. Impacts: flooding, drought conditions, impacts irrigation, river flow, water habitats.
