Modern urban living brought artists, intellectuals and people of all social classes together. All sort of political and ideological tendencies created the perfect environment for dynamic artistic developments. Artists undermined academy"s hegemony in taste through stylistic iconoclasm & exhibiting outside the salons. Artists approached art making in and individualist manner. Artists used anti-academic styles and techniques to unsettles the bourgeoisies & nobility"s aesthetic and cultural values. Dealers invested in the careers of artists while critics publicized artists" works works. They showed the work rejected by the salons, with the purpose of defying the academy"s traditionalist system. A marriage of artistic freedom and entrepreneurial spirit. Began in france after the revolution of 1848. Was shaped by the chaos & social changes taking place. Realists gave everyday events & people supremacy over idealized or historicist allegories.
