The ways in which a certain image of one"s place in the world becomes internalized and then functions as a guide to proper conduct in a given social context. Ideologies that are told to us repeated by important social institutions such as the church, the law, education, government, and the media (i. e. consumerism, gender, childhood) Figure of speech in which one thing stands for another. Sustained narrative in which the characters and situations stand for more general qualities or states. Can be read in many different ways (i. e. race of ethnicity, sustainability, capitalism, etc. ) Involves medium-specific qualities such a technology, editing, sound, genre conventions, actors, narrative structure, etc.
