FNN 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dietary Reference Intake, Nutrient, Overconsumption
Document Summary
Unless an individual has participated in a nutrient requirement study, it is almost impossible to determine his/her exact requirement for a given nutrient. We rely on estimates that the individual"s requirement will be close to the average. That is the ear which is our best estimate for an individual"s unobservable requirement. Ear: estimated average requirement for a nutrient for 50% of a given age/gender group. Definition: the daily intake estimated to meet the requirement of 50% of the people in a specific age and gender group. Appears to be adequate for half the population. Adequate to meet the criteria for some kind of nutrient. Use to evaluate individual nutrient needs and plan nutrition programs to meet groups" needs. Rda: is what the dri committee then decided to recommend for the entire age/gender group to make sure almost everyone 97. 5% in a specific age/gender group met their individual requirement for that nutrient.
