Document Summary

Lecture 4 earth"s structure: plate tectonics and earthquake. Inner core: made up of 2 mid rocks; iron and nickel, solid. Lithosphere: zone of rock, between 60 to 400km depending on the land on which it is from (if there are mountains on top the lithosphere will be wider, veneer thick layer, which has so many crusts on it. Asthenosphere: weak layer, plastic and very fluid because of high temperatures, asthenos weak, range from 400 to 700km. Continental crust: made of siao, silica and aluminum, lighter in weight, find a lot of iron, relatively warmer and lighter than the oceanic crust, continental crust has great viscosity (flows very slowly) Alfred wegener (german scientist: left a legacy of continental drifting theory, proposed continental is moving, his theory was not accepted at that time, his theory is accepted after finding evidence to prove his theory. Continental movement/drift: very slow, 3 major reasons: Magma convection resulted from substances being lighter and buoyant.
