Ecosystems consist of all the biotic organisms, along with abiotic materials and energy with which they interact and depend. Ecosystem vary in scale: a) small microhabitats b) large habitats - entire landscapes. Stats canada (based on pop and pop density): Dense urban core + adjacent urban and rural areas. Total population of at least 100,000 of which 50,000 or more live in the core. Urban core + adjacent urban and rural area. Total population of at least 100,000 of which at least 10,000 live in core. Dense human populations where the human built enviro dominates. Urban ecosystems also vary in scale: a) small towns and communities 2) major urban centres. Biotic and abiotic materials - ex. biotic: food, abiotic: gravel, water. All these to sustain populations, maintain structures, and grow. Our niche - our role in ecosystem; bringing in food, using e, putting out waste.
