Organizing : the process of arranging people and other resources to work together to accomplish tasks. Formal structures: the structure of the organization in its official state, organization chart, formal communication channels, type of work performed, division of work, levels of management. Departmentalization: the process of making decisions on ow to group work positions into formal teams that are linked together. Informal structures: the way work actually gets done, relationships in the shadow organization, unofficial working relationships and communication patterns. Functional structures: people with similar skills and performing similar tasks are grouped together into formal work units. (figure 8. 2) Divisional structures: group together people who on the same product or process, serve similar customers, and/or are located in the same area or geographical region. Potential advantages of divisional structures: more flexibility in responsing to environmental changes. Improved coordination: clear points of responsibility, expertise focusd on specific customers, products, and regions, greater ease in restructuring.
