Influence: power: ability to get someone else to do something you want done or to make things happen the way you want them, figure 11. 2 sources of power. Power of the position: based on things managers can offer to others. Rewards, coercion: if you don"t do what i ask, i"ll punish you, legitimacy: i"m the boss, do what i tell you to do. Power of the person: based on how managers are viewed by others. Expertise: as a source of special knowledge and information. Reference: as a person with whom others like to identify. How to turn power into influence: acquire all sources of power, reward/legitimate/coercive power: temporary compliance, expert/referent power: enduring results and generates commitment. Ex: the vision of trsm is to shaping the global leaders of tomorrow.
