After civil rights act, african americans focus on voting rights that have been pushed down because of poll taxes, literacy tests, racial violence. Sncc organized both blacks and whites to go to south and register black voters (mississippi freedom summer) These freedom schools teach black history and philosophy of civil rights movement. 3 volunteers go missing (one black, 2 white), bodies found 6 weeks later executed, sparks national outrage. Also sparks nationwide support for crm, leads pres. Police released the 3 to white supremacists who killed them. March 7, 1965 - led by john lewis. Marchers are brutally assaulted by state troopers, racists. August 6, 1965 - outlaws discriminatory tests and introduces federal supervision of registration in states with low black registration. Cra ends legal segregation in public spaces and schools. Vra won federal protection for black voting rights. Came from a strategy of pursuing legal changes thro non-violent direct action.
