May 1960: children"s crusade (king says it was necessary to risk harm to children in order to ensure their freedom in the future ) In response to southern violence, kennedy urges congress to pass a civil rights bill that will protect black civil and voting rights. Jfk and the civil rights bill: he dies before he can enact it! August 28th 1963: civil rights activists organize the march to support the civil rights bill. July 2, 1964: president lyndon b. johnson pushes the civil rights bill through. Outlaws discrimination in employment on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion or national origin -> equal employment opportunity commission: established to enforce it. Authorizes the justice department to institute suits to desegregate public schools and other facilities.
