Document Summary
Psychological & physiological systems influence individuals" behaviours, attidues, & abilities. Age-related changes divided into 2 categories: external changes, visible changes in skin, hair colour, height, & muscle mass. Increase in weight as person ages poses risk to health. Increased risk for disability & reduction in independence & quality of life. Loss of height: external changes can influence person"s self-esteem & social interactions. Increased fat cells: decreased bone density and muscle mass, contribute to mobility challenges--- difficulty doing chores or engage in activities. Longer a person lives= greater the likelihood that they will develop a disease. Important to understand that aging is not a disease. Biological (genetic) & environmental factors (exposure to toxins, low socio-economic status) influences risk for dieases. Diseases more likely to occur in later life: cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, alzheimer"s disease. Downward trajectory in physical & psychological systems--- frailty, disability. Gradual loss in perceptual, cognitive, or physical systems.
