Week 6 communicating in teams and organizations. Process by which info is transmitted +understood b/w 2+ people. People work interdependently only when they can communicate with each other: coordinating work activities, vehicle for org learning, critical ingredient for decision making. Improving communication: coding/decoding: both parties are motivated + able to communicate through channel. Has to be the same channel (e. g. in-person, smartphone: both parties have similar codebooks. E. g. symbols, idioms, language, gestures, etc: both parties share similar mental models of communication context, sender is experienced at communicating message topic. Audio + visual cues (tone, facial expression, body language) Channel"s data-carrying capacity needs to be aligned w/ communication activity. High richness when channel: conveys multiple cues, allows timely feedback, allows customized message, permits complex symbols. Use rich communication media when situation is non-routine + ambiguous. Includes social sites (e. g. facebook, twitter, blogs, etc. ) Presenting individual"s identity, enabling convos, sharing info, sensing others" online presence, maintaining relationships, revealing status, supporting interest communities.
