Briefing: the future of work (the economist jan 03, 2015, pp. 17-20) Puts time starved urban professionals in touch with job-starved workers. Can crate a distasteful caricature of technologically driven social disparity. Marks a new stage of a deeper transformation: using smartphone to deliver labour and services will challenge many fundamental assumptions of 20th century capitalism from the nature of the firm to the structure of careers. The idea that having a good job means being an employee of a particular company is a legacy of a period that stretched from about 1880 (post industrial revolution) to 1980. Model encountered challenges in the 70"s due to deteriorating industrial relations(really ! no not really), and then globalisation and computerisation. This resulted in a more rootless and flexible labour force. The on-demand economy is a result of pairing that workforce with the smartphone.
