Document Summary

Strategic importance of occuptional health and safety (ohs) Ohs are laws intended to protect the health and safety of worker by minimizing work-related accidents and illnesses. These laws fall into three categories: general health and safety rules, rules for specific industries (ex. mining) and rules related to specific hazards (e. g. asbestos). Due diligence employers are responsible for taking every reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of their workers. Specific duties of the employer include: filing government accident reports, maintaining records, ensuring that safety rules are enforced and posting safety notices and legislative information. Some employee responsibilities include taking reasonable care to protect their own health and safety and, in most cases, that of their co-workers. Also, they must wear protective clothing and equipment (where appropriate) and report any contravention of the law or regulations. Employee rights: the right to know about workplace safety hazards, the right to participate in the ohs process, the right to refuse unsafe work.
