Week 4 lecture notes: the heart and vessels. Class and lab objectives: self-review anatomy and physiology, outline developmental and cultural considerations and health promotion strategies, outline and practice subjective questions, identify guidelines for preparation of objective data collection. The neck vessels: auscultate and then, palpate carotid arteries, inspect and outline how to differentiate between carotid and jugular pulses, inspect the jugular venous pulse (found under the special considerations for advanced practice pg. 504): identify significance of central venous pressure. The heart: landmarks: most located in the left side, -- found btwn 2-5th intercostal spaces, sternal line, mid-clavicular line (mcl)- to count for the apical sounds , axillae line, intercostal spaces (ics) Pulmonary circulation: unoxygenated blood goes out the pulmonary artery and comes back orxygenated through the pulmonary vein. Precordium - 2nd-5th intercostal space -- mostly on th left sternal border. Apex & base apex= bottom in the 5th intercostal space: base- the top.
