Nse13 week 6 - vital signs (temperature, oxygen, saturation and pain) Reflects bodies metabolic state, controlled by the hypothalus. Indicates amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood stream. Swift and accurate measurement (usually in 20-30 seconds) Infection control, can people take it orally, make sure its working. Senses infrared emissions of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) Shares the same vascular supply that perfuses the hypothalamus (internal carotid artery) ), very hard to do it with critically ill patients. Safe and accurate for infants and young children when the environment is controlled. Only used when other routes are not practical. Disadvantage: if they open their mouth, it affects the readings. Does not work below freezing point of mercury, which is -38. 83 degrees celsius. Norm 95-100% will vary if lung disease or anemia. Source of light originates from probe is partly absorbed by hemoglobin. Calculating the absorption at the two wavelengths the processor can compute the proportion of hemoglobin which is oxygenated.
