Inhibits thrombus and clot formation by blocking the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and fibrinogen to fibrin, the final steps of clot formation. Interferes with the hepatic synthesis of vitamin-k dependent clotting factors resulting in eventual depletion and prolongation of clotting times. Treatment of thromboembolic complications of atrial fibrillation (af) with embolization, cardiac valve replacement. Use cautiously with hf, diarrhea, fever, psychotic or depressed. Severe thrombocytopenia (any disorder in which there is an abnormally low amount of platelets) Prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and peripheral arterial embolism.
