Document Summary

Chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways involves complex interaction of airway obstruction, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, & is directly r/t degree of airway inflammation. 1500 miles of airways in our lungs. Resistance of respiratory tract during inspiration & expiration. Affected by diameter of airways ability to take air in/out. Diseases like asthma affects diameter of airways - increases airway resistance. With problems at smaller branches of bronchioles affects elasticity of lungs > stiffens up & difficulty breathing. Decreased compliance = inflation of lungs is more difficult. Elasticity comes from alveoli walls of air sacs of lungs have elastic fibres that helps with recoil. Created by alveoli makes it slippery to be able to expand/contract, & prevents from collapsing. Can keep babies alive by giving surfactant to prevent lung from collapsing b/c don"t produce surfactant until later in gestation. Macrophages: for infections, inhaled debris/particles help keep bottom of lungs clean. Diffusion: going from higher to lower for gas exchange.
