Different phases that the global system has gone through. Global powers met to come up with a stable system following. German nationalism formed after poor economic state, and abuse by other european countries. League of nations (predecessor to the un) was formed (1918). League of nations considered a failure, as collective security did not work out. No direct conflict between the 2 main players (us vs russia). 2 fundamentally different philosophies how the world, and economy should be run. Cold war begins because russians and americans have 2 different perspectives coming out the war. Both are the 2 (technically) last standing survivors of ww2. Eastern european countries given elections , although all elections fixed by soviets. Left bulk of armies within europe, and created bases around the soviet borders, to contain the threat of expansion. (britain, germany, near china etc. ) Government was keen on taking back the iranian oil industry, as western countries controlled it, and benefited from it.
