Memory: structure, short term, 20-30sec, long term (diagram on test, structural things. Biology of memory: memories of different types are stored in different brain regions, premotor (planning) primary motor (doing, but to plan and do you need context , a dorsal (upper) stream helps with how to do things. It talks to a ventral (lower) stream that provides object identification. Putting it together: long-term potentiation, hippocampus, memory consolidation. Teaching sleeping rats: rats run mazes when awake, we note neurons that are uniquely active in given maze locations , then, when they sleep, We wait for them to dream about their day : that is, we wait for memory consolidation, more specifically: we wait for the place-specific neurons to become active. When one place is active we give chemical rewards (during sleep) just for that place. The next day, rats spend more time in the locations we rewarded in their sleep.
