PSY 302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Plantar Reflex, Moro Reflex, Swallowing
Newborn reflexes: reflex: involuntary, automatic response to a stimulus. Infant states regular/quiet sleep (8 hours) irregular/active sleep (8 hours, rem: drowsing (1hour, alert awake (alert inactive) (2. 5 hrs, active awake (alert activity) (2. 5 hrs, crying (2 hrs) Proportion of rem sleep: 50% of newborn sleep, 25 - 30 % of 6-month-old sleep. Why do newborns spend so much time in rem: autostimulation theory. Primitive reflexes: infant states: (6 stages) Development of the brain (images: prenatal and adult) Structures of the brain: b. developmental processes, c. experience: plasticity. Structures of the brain: neurons: basic units of the brain and nervous system, synapses: connective spaces between neurons, glia: nerve cell that develop and produce myelin to protect and nourish the neurons, the cerebral cortex, cerebral lateralization. Cerebral hemispheres: the cortex is divided into two separate halves. Cerebral lateralization: the two hemispheres are specialized for different modes of processing. B. developmental processes: neurogenesis: proliferation of neurons through cell division.
