Emotional intimacy: comfortable sharing feelings, empathy for feelings of another try to understand & be aware of the other persons state of mind. Familiarity developed through shared knowledge of each other & experience. Women: built on shared intimacy, self-revelation, nurturing, emotional support: support in the form of listening. Men: less deep talk, more closeness in doing less self-disclosure/intimacy: support in the form of distraction. Women"s friendships more likely to survive geographic barriers. Emotional expression and vulnerability are unacceptable in boys. Research shows men are just as capable of forming intimate friendships but: would involve violating gender boundaries, risking heterosexist assumptions. Fairly common (56% males, 44% females) identify a close friend of the other sex. More common among feminine men and masculine women . Generally less intimate, stable, and emotionally support: do offer insider"s perspective. Often blur lines b/t platonic and romantic. Men most often cite wife as best friend: share feelings only with her.
