PSY 308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Long-Term Memory, Memory Consolidation, Sensory Memory

80 views4 pages

Document Summary

Before we can remember, we must learn: encoding --> consolidation --> retrieval. Encoding-taking info from the world and converting it to some neuro something. Results for first trial indicated sensory memory can hold 3-4 items. 2nd trial: showed 3-4 items can be held in sensory memory. Reason for the results: visualizing in your head. Sensory memory: photographic memory, but it decays w/in 500 ms. No hemispheric advantage (both sides of the brain are working-it doesn"t matter) After acquiring the information, the info will go to the stm (short term memory) By paying attention: repeating, writing , putting it in a schema etc Peterson & peterson(1959): trigram -three letters grouped together. Recall after a time interval: as time increases, retention of info decreases. The longer you keep an info, the chances of forgetting it, also increases. Interference: thinking other thoughts--interferes what we are learning. Waugh and norman(1965): figure out decay or interference cause of info lost in memory.
