The average number of neurons in the brain = 100 billion. A newborn babys brain is as soft and gooey as tapioca pudding. The adult brain weighs about 3 pounds. The average number of glial cells in the brain = 10-50 times the number of neurons. Most dramatic develop of the huan brain in the first two years of life. During this stage, billions of interconnections between neurons are formed. Neuron specialist functions: receive signals from neighboring neurons, integrate signals, give rise to nerve pulses, conduct pulses, transmit pulses to other neurons. Each part of the neuron plays a specific role in communication. The cell body contains the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria. Cell nucleus - helps contain genetic information. Overall function of cell body is to 1)synthesize information, 2) metabolize information, and to: provide energy where needs (it"s an information integration zone) The nucleus in the genetic blueprint, these are our genes.
